Austin (1080 KRLD) - The White House says it will use its legal authority to stop any new border wall construction and will ask Congress to redirect resources to technology-based border security.
This week Governor Abbott is set to announce details on continuing the building of a wall along the Southern Border.
Luis Vera with League of United Latin American Citizens says the federal government lets states set aside a billion dollars for border security. "He doesn't have enough money to build a new wall. The only way he can possibly accomplish anything would be to add to what Trump has already done. And I don't think this administration is going to let him do that."
Vera says the federal government will throw everything they can at this to slow it down. "I'm sure there's some federal regulations out there that will come into play. They'll throw everything in the book to really, really slow it down. When the federal government or a state government wants to slow something down, they can do it." He says environmental challenges are likely.
He says the Texas Supreme Court will side with Abbott on all things legal, but the federal courts rule against him.
Vera adds Abbott has more pressing issues, mainly redistricting and other measures that will come into play in a special session.
