Trump returns to political spotlight this weekend at CPAC

The battle continues within the Republican party on the future role of former President Donald Trump.

As some in the GOP seek a "divorce" from Trump, the former president is scheduled to address the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Sunday.  It will be his first public speech since leaving office on Jan. 20.

The CPAC gathering typically would be seen as a launching point for potential 2024 Republican presidential candidates, but the shadow of the former president will loom large this weekend.  U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) told USA Today, "I look at the polls," Romney said, "and the polls show that among the names being floated as potential contenders in 2024, if you put President Trump in there among Republicans, he wins in a landslide."

During his final days in office, Trump hinted he would be returning to public life in some form.

This Sunday on CBS "Face the Nation," moderator Margaret Brennan will address the presence of the former president at CPAC.  Brennan talked with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
