San Antonio (1080 KRLD) - Governor Abbott recently signed into law seven new weapons-related bills. The first on the list was House Bill 1927, or Permitless carry. It becomes Texas law September 1st and one weapons instructor says a lot could go wrong.
Mike Taylor, the owner of San Antonio Concealed Handgun says a lot of people who took his class had limited experience, and "several were scared on the firing range, loading the bullets in the magazine backwards, not knowing, turning dangerously at others. I think being unvetted and not trained, I think it's going to create a dangerous situation possibly."
He says he can see the pros and cons of the law; "But it could be a dangerous situation. It really could be."
He equates this to getting a driver's license. "When you're 15 years old you take driver's ed. Then you drive for six months with your parents or someone with a license to make necessary corrections. Now, as of September first, you go to a gun store, you buy a gun, you strap it on and you carry it."
He says training is recommenced. Without, he says there could be "anxiety, being impulsive. The gun going off accidentally. Someone taking a gun from you. There's a lot going on. It was dangerous when you had to have a license, but now with no license? All I can say is get ready."
He offers a two-hour class and says he may be doing less business after the law takes effect; "I enjoy teaching people but I can't make someone get training. It's going to be up to the individual to get training."
He notes guns come with a user manual and people should read it.
