The officers arrived before the fire department and saw the woman and her ten-year-old daughter on their balcony with flames and smoke threatening their lives.

One officer climbed up on the wooden fence surrounding the ground floor apartment's patio and reached up to the balcony to grab the girl and hand her down to safety.

Just then, firefighters arrived and rescued the mother with a ladder. Rescuers also found the family cat safe and sound.

The officers have been nominated for the department's Meritorious Service Medal. One officer also used his own funds to buy Christmas gifts for the family after they lost everything in the fire.
