Does a refugee house run by the Catholic church have the right to shelter illegal immigrants?
That question is now under consideration by the Texas Supreme Court. The State is trying to get records from the Annunciation House of El Paso on grounds that it is housing illegal immigrants.
Lawyer Elizabeth Kiernan of the Liberty Institute argued the Annunciation House is doing the Lord's work and is protected. "The Catholic Church has claimed Annunciation House as one of its won. Annunciation House Founder testified that his acts of charity are motivated by his catholic faith. If Texas law protects anything, it protects this religious charity from outright closure.
The Texas Attorney General's office says the laws are clear, no business or charity has the right to break the law. The Supreme Court will likely rule in a few months.
