Dr. Matt Smith, the newly appointed superintendent of Arlington Independent School District (AISD), is gearing up for his first official day in Arlington on Tuesday, January 30.

"It is the thrill of a lifetime," Dr. Smith expressed. "Arlington is known as a transformational district. It's a large district that has done amazing things for students for years."

Dr. Smith held the superintendent job in Belton ISD, and joins AISD with more than 20 years of experience in various administrative roles.

One of the paramount focuses for Dr. Smith is to execute the directives outlined in the $1.6 billion bond measures that have been passed.

He emphasized the importance of community collaboration and the progress made by the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee.

"Seeing those projects come to life, yes, is part of the job of a superintendent. But I think most importantly, it's really exciting for the community that we serve, and I'm glad to be a part of it."

Dr. Smith outlined the key strategies to guarantee that the district effectively addresses the current and future needs of parents and students.

"The number one thing that we have to do is create connections with our community so we hear their perspective," Dr. Smith said. "We want to be able to hear what students are saying, what teachers are saying, what the community is saying, what our parents are saying so that we know and understand how to plan for the future."

Highlighting the strategic plan, "Powered by Possibilities," Dr. Smith expressed his enthusiasm for creating individual opportunities for each and every student.

"We all also know that the jobs that our students are gonna be faced with, if they're a 4th grader right now, half the jobs or even more are not even created at this point yet."

Dr. Smith shed light on his vision for building strong partnerships with stakeholders and industry leaders, emphasizing the importance of a listening stance.

"I have to make sure that I'm visible and show up and learn about this community first," he said. "The number one thing that I think I need to do is have a listening stance first."
