Study shows low health system rankings for Texas

Texas is struggling when it comes to the performance of our health system. That's the finding of the latest Scorecard on State Health System Performance from the Commonwealth Fund.

The annual study ranks states' health care systems based on how well they work to provide high-quality, accessible, and equitable health care. For this year, the Commonwealth Fund also looked specifically at how well states have managed COVID-19.

Overall, Texas ranked 48th out of 51. The fact that Texas has the highest rate of uninsured adults in the nation (23.6%) dragged down the state's ranking.

"The single most important thing that Texas can do is expand eligibility for Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act," says Sara Collins, Commonwealth Fund Vice President for Health Care Coverage and Access.

"There are a lot of people (in Texas) who are eligible for (ACA) coverage, but not covered. So Texas could mount a much more aggressive enrollment strategy to help people get covered," Collins adds.

When it came to COVID-19 metrics, Texas was 44th in the nation. Hawaii performed the best, and Alabama the worst.
