The wake of the pandemic brought along The Great Resignation, where workers voluntarily left their jobs to pursue other interests. Texans took that notion very seriously, apparently.
According to new data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, more workers in Texas have quit their jobs than any other state in the country, with 3,154,000 people leaving their jobs just from January to August alone!
It’s not like people are leaving the state for greener pastures, either. While more people are quitting their jobs in Texas, the data also found that 4,643,000 million people in Texas got jobs in that same period.
And it’s not like people are leaving their jobs for something with higher pay, as the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta shows the pay gap between switchers and stayers is the narrowest it has been since the fall of 2020.
Jay Denton, Chief Analytics Officer at Labor IQ can’t explain the mass exodus when higher pay isn’t involved, but advises, “The labor shortage is likely here to stay” and that “voluntary quits will remain elevated… because the only way to fill open roles is by poaching them from another company."
Denton advised businesses to “keep focusing on those retention efforts."
