A long-time employee of the Texas Department of Public Safety is being promoted. Senior Deputy Director Freeman F. Martin will take over as the new director on Dec. 1.

"Freeman Martin is the right choice to lead the Texas Department of Public Safety and will be instrumental to ensure the safety and security of Texans," Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) said.

Freeman started with the DPS as a highway patrol trooper. He worked his way up through the ranks with stops in Lubbock, Houston, and Austin.

"The opportunity to lead this organization that I love is the honor of a lifetime," he said. "I'm committed to carrying out our mission of protecting and serving the people of Texas."

He takes over the job previously held by Director Steve McCraw, who announced his resignation earlier this year. Martin will start his new position on Dec. 1. There will be a swearing-in ceremony at DPS Headquarters in Austin on Dec. 2.
