A coalition of 18 multifaith and nonreligious families filed a federal class-action lawsuit Tuesday seeking to stop public school districts across Texas from displaying the Ten Commandments in classrooms as required under the newly enacted Senate Bill 10.
The lawsuit argues the mandate violates the Constitution and asks the court to bar any district not already covered by earlier rulings from posting the displays.
Several federal judges have already blocked the law in individual cases, including for 25 districts ordered to remove posters last month.
The statewide suit broadens that challenge and adds 16 more districts, many in North Texas, as families push for a uniform halt to the policy while the courts decide whether the law can stand.
