Jacksonville Police say a man shot a police officer Sunday, and departments are now looking for the gunman. Jacksonville Police say the officer "encountered" the gunman while on duty at 4:41 p.m.
The officer was flown to a hospital in Tyler, 27 miles to the north. Jacksonville Police say the officer was stable after surgery.
The gunman escaped. Police issued a "Blue Alert," sending messages to people's phones and placing them on highway message boards.
They have identified the suspect as Bobby Michael Dennis, 64. He is 5'9" and weighs 152 pounds.
Dennis is Black with black hair and brown eyes. He was wearing a black jacket and "all black clothing."
Dennis may be driving a gray, 2012 GMC Sierra with Texas license plate TRW3919.
Police say Dennis may be armed with a rifle, so if anyone sees him, they encourage people not to approach him but call 911.
Jacksonville ISD cancelled classes at all schools Monday. The district says, because of the search and investigation, "a large area near JISD facilities will be inaccessible for bus routes and may prevent many students from traveling safely to school."
