A Venezuelan oil tanker seized by U.S. authorities is anchored off the coast of Galveston as federal agencies review allegations that the vessel was part of a so-called “ghost fleet” used to move sanctioned oil.
The tanker was captured near Venezuela in recent weeks and brought to the Gulf Coast while officials determine its legal status, ownership, and next steps. Authorities have said the ship is being held in Galveston because of its deep-water anchorage, strong security presence, access to federal courts, and proximity to major energy infrastructure.
Federal officials allege the vessel was involved in transporting oil in violation of international sanctions, though no final determinations have been announced. The ship remains under U.S. control as the investigation continues.
No timeline has been given for when a decision will be made on the tanker’s future or the disposition of its cargo.
