Texans who heat with electricity are naturally concerned about ERCOT and the state's power grid, but those who use natural gas have separate concerns.

Natural gas is distributed by Atmos Energy where the company has some warnings about this cold snap we're expecting.

For one thing, don't ever use a gas oven or gas stove top to heat your home in a pinch. If the flame should go out, the appliance will keep spewing natural gas into your home — so that's why natural gas is so smelly.

Atmos Energy's Kristin Goodspeed tells 1080 KRLD that, by law, natural gas companies must mix in Mercaptan, the chemical that gives natural gas that distinctive rotten-egg smell.

Atmos is also hoping customers will dial their thermostats back to about 68 degrees to save gas during what is sure to be a high consumption week ahead.
