Good morning, North Texas!
After yesterday’s widespread rain and areas of flash flooding, we finally get a brief break in the weather today before the next round of storms arrives on Thursday.
We’re starting the morning quiet across the region with a little shallow fog in spots, but visibility issues have been minor overall. Temperatures are very comfortable this morning, mainly in the upper 50s and lower 60s behind the cold front, which has now pushed all the way to the Texas coast and taken the heavier rain with it.
Today should be relatively calm with highs near 80 degrees and even a few breaks in the clouds developing this afternoon.
Our next weather system will begin organizing across West Texas tonight, bringing another round of widespread rain and thunderstorms into North Texas during the day Thursday. The timing currently looks similar to yesterday, with the best chances for heavier rain and storms developing from late morning through the afternoon hours.
We’ll catch another short break on Friday with temperatures warming into the middle 80s.
Unfortunately, another upper-level system is expected to move into the region for the holiday weekend, bringing scattered showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday, especially during the afternoon and evening hours.
There is still some uncertainty regarding Memorial Day itself. If this upper-level low drifts into Oklahoma as some models suggest, rain chances could decrease significantly by Monday with improving conditions and warmer temperatures. If it stalls closer to North Texas, additional showers and storms may linger into the holiday.
Temperatures through the weekend will generally reach the mid-80s, but many locations could remain in the 70s where rain and clouds persist.
One important reminder heading into the holiday weekend: please use extra caution around area lakes and waterways. Additional heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding concerns through the weekend, and boating conditions may not be ideal at times. There will likely be dry periods mixed in, and we’ll have a much better handle on those windows by Friday as the short-range models come into clearer focus.
Enjoy the quieter weather today when you can—it’s the only weather we’ve got!
