Mountain climbers in Washington state are curious about a phenomenon they've been seeing. Some of them call it Watermelon Snow.
At the high elevations of Mount Saint Helens they've been asking the US Forest Service about it and one ranger says it's caused by a species of "cold-loving green algae."
The darker color of the algae can darken the surface of glaciers which, they say, can increase the speed of the glacier's melting.
