North Texas Weather Flip: Storms Arrive, Pattern Changes

Good morning, North Texas! Meteorologist Dan Brounoff here in the KRLD Weather Center.

Our long-awaited pattern change is slowly beginning to unfold today, and it looks like it will continue through the rest of the week and into the holiday weekend.

We’re waking up to cloudy skies across the area this morning. Radar is mostly quiet, but there are a few pockets of light rain and drizzle around. Temperatures are already sitting in the upper 70s to near 80° here on this May 19th morning.

The main feature I’m tracking today is a cold front currently moving through central Oklahoma, now south of Interstate 44 and heading toward North Texas by late morning into the afternoon hours.

Showers and storms have already developed along the front in Oklahoma, and those storms are expected to expand in coverage as they cross the Red River and move into North Texas. The primary threats today will be:

  • Small hail
  • Damaging wind gusts

The greatest storm chances for the Dallas-Fort Worth area look to be from late morning through mid-afternoon.

The longer the front takes to move through, the warmer temperatures can become ahead of it, which could allow some hail to grow a bit larger—especially south and east of DFW. A few Severe Thunderstorm Warnings may be issued across North Texas before the day is over.

As for rainfall totals, everyone should see rain at some point today, but amounts will vary depending on where storms develop and whether they “train” over the same areas. More rain will fall east of I-35W than west of it. Most locations should pick up at least a half inch of rain, with locally higher totals certainly possible.

Temperatures will climb into the mid-80s ahead of the front before falling back into the 70s and eventually the 60s overnight tonight. Some northern counties may dip into the 50s by early Wednesday morning.

A few leftover showers are possible tonight, but Wednesday overall looks relatively dry with highs near 80°.

Looking ahead:

• Thursday: Another disturbance arrives with more showers and storms. A couple could become strong. High near 80°.

• Friday: Mid-80s possible with isolated showers and storms. Most areas stay dry.

• Holiday Weekend: Another disturbance may stall over North Central Texas, which could keep scattered to numerous afternoon and evening showers and storms in the forecast through much of the weekend.

If that setup holds, temperatures may struggle to get above 80° for several days before we possibly dry out by Memorial Day with highs rebounding into the mid-80s.

Enjoy the rain and the weather when you can… it’s the only weather you’ve got!

Please drive safely today, especially during the heavier downpours and storms.
