Storm chances return to North Texas after beautiful weekend

North Texas forecast for Monday, May 5, 2025.
North Texas forecast for Monday, May 5, 2025.
National Weather Service

After a beautiful weekend, shower and thunderstorm chances increase this week, and some of them may become severe. A new Flood Watch has been issued for much of North Texas for Tuesday.

A slow-moving upper-level storm system will be paralleling Interstate 40 this week, increasing the rain chances in North Texas, and some of these may become severe on Tuesday.

Monday morning started under a partly cloudy sky. Temperatures were below average, with readings mainly in the 50s. After the noon hour, scattered showers will develop to the southwest and move across the area this afternoon into early evening. Nothing too heavy, but enough to wreak havoc on the afternoon commute home. Temperatures may reach the mid-70s before the day is done.

A few leftover showers are possible through the overnight hours as temperatures dip into the 60s by Tuesday morning. This cooler air will keep the line of showers and storms headed toward North Texas by mid-morning at bay. There could be some small hail and gusty wind, but the severe weather threat ramps up by late afternoon, south and east of the area. All modes of severe weather are possible.

A Flood Watch is in place for much of North Texas, where 1-2 inches of rain will fall. Isolated higher totals are possible east and southeast of DFW. Temperatures will hover in the low and mid-70s.

There should be break in the rain on Wednesday with highs in the mid-70s.

This slow-moving upper-level low will be cruising across northern Oklahoma on Thursday and Friday. Depending on the speed of the system, it will depend on how long the rain lasts from Thursday into Friday. The good news is that there shouldn't be anything severe, just general showers, as temperatures hover in the upper 60s to low 70s. That is cool for this time of year.

If the extended weather models are correct, North Texas is going to have another fantastic weekend with plenty of sunshine, high temperatures in the mid to upper 70s.

Have a great day today and enjoy the weather when you can, it's the only weather you've got!
