Women's Health Week: Breast density & cancer risk

During Women's Health Week, May 8-14, women are encouraged to make their health a top priority, and educate themselves on possible risks.

Recent research indicates that while nearly half of females over the age of 40 have dense breasts, many do not realize the presence of that density can increase their risk of breast cancer significantly.

According to the survey from Bayer Radiology, the risk for breast cancer can be 4-6 times higher for women with dense breasts, compared to those with the least dense breasts.  About a quarter of women said they were "worried" and "unsure of what to do next" when informed about their breast density.  Only 26% say they were urged to seek additional screening.

Breast Radiologist Dr. Pamela Habib, Head of U.S. Medical Affairs at Bayer Radiology, discussed the report and shared recommendations for women with dense breasts as she spoke with KRLD's Chris Sommer.
