Despite its clear impact on wildlife and the environment, people worldwide continue to produce and dispose of massive amounts of plastic waste—totaling 57 million tons annually.

This amount of plastic could fill New York City's Central Park with a pile reaching the height of the Empire State Building, according to a study published in *Nature* on Wednesday.

India tops the list as the world's largest contributor to plastic pollution, generating over 10.2 million tons each year—more than double the plastic waste produced by the next two countries, Nigeria and Indonesia.
