Thieves broke into a snail farm in eastern France overnight between Sunday and Monday, making off with more than $100,000 worth of escargots, the operator confirmed Tuesday.

The farm - known for supplying snails ahead of the Christmas and New Year's holidays - said the heist left it scrambling to restock during the industry's busiest season.

The supplier, L'Escargot Des Grands Crus, reported that the theft occurred when intruders entered the buildings housing the snails and carried away large quantities of product. The company said roughly 60% of its annual revenue comes during the holiday season, underscoring the financial blow of the loss.

Local authorities have not publicly released details about suspects or leads, and the farm is now working to replenish inventory while cooperating with police. The theft has sparked concern among suppliers in the region as the holiday dining rush approaches.
