Guinness World Records has officially confirmed that a reticulated python discovered in the Maros region of Indonesia is the longest wild snake ever formally measured, clocking in at 23 feet, 8 inches.
The record-keeping organization said it reviewed photographic and measurement evidence earlier this year before certifying the female snake’s length, surpassing the typical adult range for the species of roughly 9 feet 10 inches to 19 feet 2 inches.
Reticulated pythons (Malayopython reticulatus) are native to Southeast Asia and are among the world’s longest snakes, known for their distinctive patterned skin and powerful constricting ability.
While individuals above 20 feet are rare in the wild, the newly certified record-holder exceeded expectations and drew interest from herpetologists and reptile enthusiasts around the globe.
Guinness World Records officials said the documentation required to verify the measurement included standardized photographs alongside a ruler and impartial witnesses, a process used to ensure accuracy and credibility for such claims.
There were no reports of human injury linked to the snake’s discovery, and officials did not say whether the snake will remain in the wild or be studied further.
The certification adds to a long list of animal records tracked by the organization and highlights continued scientific interest in large reptile species through careful documentation and community reporting.
