John Easdale of Dramarama looks back on the band's fan-favorite 'Anything, Anything' and performs acoustic at KROQ

On the road now on the 'Lost '80s Live tour'

Singer and songwriter John Easdale of Dramarama joins host Kevan Kenney at KROQ in Los Angeles ahead of his Lost '80s Live west coast tour dates this week, for a quick chat and acoustic performance of the band's classic, "Anything, Anything (I'll Give You)."

"A lot of the car listeners today, they assume I'm foreign because of my lack of command for the English language," Easdale, a New Jersey native, jokes while discussing how some fans in their early days mistook them for an overseas act.

"Our first album came out on a label called New Rose, which was based in Paris. And that sounds elegant," he adds, "but I'm sure back in the day that was just the only people that said, 'yes.' We were delighted that anyone wanted to put it out because we were just putting stuff out ourselves, spending our own money -- working our day jobs and spending money on recording studios."

"We pressed our own three-song seven inch and then we pressed the five-song 12 inch, and then this French label said, 'Hey, we'll license your full-length album. We said, 'Please. Yes, please. Thank you.'"

Fans will need no introduction to the band's beloved single "Anything, Anything," played on Alternative radio and '80s faves playlists for the last almost 40 years – but what they may not be aware of is that the track cost them only $200 to record back in the day.

"Well, it's kind of prorated because we probably did like, five songs for a grand or something," John admits – still an incredible deal looking back. "Actually that song probably took less time than the other songs because it was really just straightforward. The guys in the band didn't know what was going to come because I just said, 'OK, it's these four chords and just keep going…' and then, until I sang it, they didn't know they were because there's no chorus verse, there's no changes."

"We had no inkling that anyone would ever play anything of ours on the radio," Easdale adds. "It was all, you know, a labor of love and ego."
