LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Two Wilmington men were arrested in the Dec. 2021, shooting that killed a 12-year-old boy, the Los Angeles Police Department announced on Friday.

Officers arrested Damian Martinez, 21, and Gabriel Martinez, 19, in connection to the shooting death of Alexander Alvarado. The department described the pair as cousins and gang members.

On Dec. 6, 2021, police said Alvarado sat in the front seat of a black Dodge Durango near Denni Street and Blinn Avenue when the suspects opened fire. The driver — identified as Alvarado’s stepmother — was also shot. His brother was also in the car but was not shot. A 9-year-old girl on the playground at Wilmington Park Elementary School was hit in the back by a bullet. The girl and the driver both survived.

Alvarado died at the hospital from his injuries.

The LAPD filed charges including murder, attempted murder, and assault with a deadly weapon to the L.A. County District Attorney’s Office.

It's unclear what motivated the deadly shooting.
