Firefighters found the bodies of a woman, a man and a dog after extinguishing a fire Sunday that encompassed a primary home and two back houses in Sun Valley, where they reported heavy ammunition being "cooked off."

The woman's body was found in a pool, while the bodies of the man and the dog were found in the burned-out debris, the Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles police reported. The names of the deceased were withheld pending notification of their next of kin. Their relationship was not disclosed.

Crews dispatched at 5:36 a.m. Sunday to 13755 N. Glenoaks Blvd. and had the greater-alarm blaze out at 5:59 a.m., according to the fire department. Police responded to the location after receiving a radio call of shots being fired in the same area, the LAPD reported.

Police said weapons and thousands of rounds of ammo were also found at the site. A bomb squad was called to the location, as well as an arson detail. The bomb squad made sure the ordinance was rendered safe, the LAPD reported.

The three residences were then "red-tagged" by Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety.

"While remaining in a defensive position due to heavy ammunition going off, firefighters were able to extinguish the fire in all three structures," the LAFD's Margaret Stewart said. "Crews will work to address hot spots without entering the structure."

The cause of the fire was being investigated.
