A head-on collision possibly stemming from drinking and driving in Menifee injured three people, two critically, authorities said Tuesday.

The crash happened at 10:30 p.m. Monday near the intersection of Menifee Road and Camino Cristal, according to the Menifee Police Department.

"The exact cause of the collision is still under investigation, but at this time, alcohol and speed are both believed to be factors in the collision," Menifee police spokesman Chase Coburn said.

He said a Nissan Altima was headed southbound on Menifee and a Hyundai Accent was going northbound when the Nissan driver "lost control and went into oncoming traffic, causing a crash with the Hyundai."

One of the two occupants of the Nissan, identified only as a 23-year- old Sacramento man, was ejected onto the roadway.

The other occupant, a 17-year-old Menifee girl, was apparently using a safety restraint and remained in her seat, Coburn said.

Both were taken to a regional trauma center for treatment of major injuries.

The driver of the Nissan, identified only as a 64-year-old Menifee man, also suffered extensive injuries.

Coburn said the Nissan driver and the Sacramento man were in critical condition Tuesday. The girl was stable.

Anyone with information relevant to the investigation was asked to contact the police department at 951-723-1565
