A Los Angeles lawmaker wants to ensure that low-income students have access to higher education without racking up debt.

Assemblymember Miguel Santiago told KNX News’ Margaret Carrero he has introduced a bill that he said will allow any bachelor’s degree offered at a community college to be completely free,” in the same way that community colleges today offer a free AA or certification.”

The legislation would expand the California Promise Program, which Santiago said has increased college enrollment.

“Right now we've broken down barriers to the cost of education where we have thousands and thousands of students now enrolling in the College Promise Program going completely free to school,” he said.

Santiago said it's time that they offer students that opportunity for bachelor’s degrees.
