Desert regions in Southern California, particularly in the Antelope Valley, are facing an increased risk of wildfires on Monday and Tuesday due to dry, windy weather.

As a low-pressure system moves through the west coast, gusty winds of up to 40 miles per hour are expected in Palmdale and Lancaster, with humidity levels dropping as low as 8%.

“The combination of elevated winds and low humidity is bringing an elevated fire risk to the Antelope Valley,” National Weather Service senior forecaster Andrew Rorke told KNX News.

Rorke added that the heavy rain earlier this year has led to large fields of grass, which are now drying out under the sun, potentially fueling fires.

The fire danger is expected to last through Tuesday.
