An allegedly armed suspect was fatally shot by Los Angeles Police Department officers in Pacoima Wednesday and one possible suspect was still at large, authorities said.

Officers from the department's Foothill Division Gang Enforcement Detail were conducting a traffic stop on a black BMW sedan near Carl Street and Carl Place around 8:50 p.m Tuesday, according to the LAPD. The area is close to Whiteman Airport and several blocks from the Hansen Dam.

The front passenger, a 20-year-old man, got out of the BMW and led officers on a chase through a nearby housing complex. At some point during the chase, officers opened fire on the suspect, who was struck and taken into custody, police said.

Officers attempted life-saving measures before the arrival of paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department, who took the suspect to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to the LAPD.

On Wednesday, the fatally wounded man was identified by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner as Alexander Larios, whose city of residence was not known.

The suspect's handgun was recovered at the scene and booked as evidence, police said.

The driver of the BMW drove away and was being sought. No officers or bystanders were injured during the shooting, police said.

Anyone knowing more about the case was urged to call 877-LAPD-247.
