A photographer caught a beaver standing guard underneath a Canadian flag, or at least that’s what he thought.

Mike Digout, the photographer, put a Canadian flag over a beaver passage on the Meewasin trail in Saskatoon.

According to CBC News, multiple beavers walk up and down that area, so Digout figured he could get a cool picture with both a beaver and the Canadian flag in the background.

One beaver named Spud was the first to notice and walk over to the flag.

"Spud is a really curious beaver and pays a lot of attention to photographers and human things," Digout said.

After walking up, Spud decided to hang out underneath the flag, and then stood up. At that point the photographer grabbed his camera and started snapping pictures.

"What occurred to me immediately was the part of the national anthem that says 'We stand on guard for thee' and here this furry little beaver, which is a well-known symbol of Canada, standing straight up and actually looking like it was paying respect to the flag because she was looking right at it," Digout said.

Then Spud showed the photographer what he was really interested in.

"She obviously recognized the smell of something she likes to eat. She leaned over, and after looking at it a few times, she grabbed one of the branches that was holding up the flag and made a run for it," Digout said.

Digout chased after the beaver in an effort to save the flag.

"Just as I was about to take steps toward her, the flag broke off the flagpole, and she scurried back into the pond with dinner out of my flag pole," Digout added.
