According to exclusive reporting from Axios, President Joe Biden is considering a high-profile ambassadorship for Mayor Eric Garcetti -- to India.
Two sources with NBC News say Garcetti is in talks with the Biden administration.
The timing of the move, though not yet reported, does coincide with a recent court order to find shelter for all of the homeless living in downtown Los Angeles’ Skid Row by the end of September. Additionally, the possible exit of Garcetti leaves a void in the city amid a recall move against Governor Gavin Newsom.
According to Axios, Garcetti, 50, whose term is up in the fall of 2022, is one of several candidates being considered for the India posting. Biden is set to announce his nominations later in May.
Last year, Garcetti admitted he was contemplating a presidential run, he ultimately passed.
"As the administration reached out to me about serving, I let them know early this week that my city needs me now, and then I want to be here and that I need to be here," he said during a news conference.
