Some Boyle Heights residents are on the verge of being evicted from their rent-controlled homes.

KNX News’ Margaret Carrero reported that the landlord is evicting residents to demolish the property on East First Street and build an apartment complex with dozens of units.

A demolition moratorium from Boyle Heights is still pending final approval from the state, according to a spokesperson for L.A. City Councilmember Kevin de León’s office. Carrero spoke to Chris Estrada, with the L.A. Center for Community Law and Action, who was at a rally held by the impacted residents.

“Once they build these new towers, they will not have rent control. And so they're trying to demolish this rent-controlled property and remove the already dwindling rent-controlled stock that we have in L.A.,” he said.

The rally was held as an attempt to convince the landlord to meet with residents and the Tenants Association and negotiate with them to prevent the displacement of five families.

The tenants received 120-day notices that the property was being withdrawn from the rental market under the Ellis Act in late December.

The spokesperson for de León’s office said that the proposed project would provide affordable housing for neighborhood residents.
