Aligning with the head of the CDC, California Governor Gavin Newsom says he believes schools can reopen safely before all teachers are vaccinated.
The governor’s thinking aligns with guidance from the head of the CDC who has said that teachers do not need to get vaccinated before campuses can welcome students back into the classroom in a safe manner.
Governor Newsom pointed to a number of schools that are already open and have done so safely.
"In January, we had 87 reported cases - of positive cases in our schools. That is down from where we were in November- December despite January being a record month in terms of community spread," he says.
When it comes to reopening campuses in the LA Unified School District, Supt. Austin Beutner has said teachers and staff must be vaccinated before that can happen.
Meanwhile, in San Francisco, its City Attorney announced he is filing a lawsuit aimed at forcing schools to get kids back into classrooms.
Newsom also said the state is prioritizing teachers for vaccines.
