As California continues to seek answers for the problems that stem from droughts, including the wildfires that rage hotter and longer, one solution appears to be to take a page from one of the most popular programs from television’s earliest days.

The Golden State plans to “leave it to beavers.”

State policies are being shifted to utilize the environmental benefits that beaver dams can provide. Officials say the dams serve as important wildlife habitats, are able to improve groundwater, and are naturally preventative of wildfires.

So how does the state get the beavers to do their important work in the right places?

Currently, a pilot program is in place that would relocate beavers to areas that are the most ripe for the natural rewards of embracing the beaver population.

The state is also working to educate people on those dam benefits and urging Californians not to hunt or kill beavers they see in the wild, but rather work around them.
