Construction on the new Wild Rivers water park in Irvine began on Wednesday.

According to ABC7 News, the park is expected to open next summer.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, former Mayor Christina Shea said, “We’ve been waiting for 15 years to move forward on this opportunity."

The park was originally opened in 1986, but closed in 2011 after the company said it lost its lease with The Irvine Company. Since 2012, there were attempts to redevelop the park. The park was set to reopen in 2014, but was delayed another year before it was eventually cancelled due land approval and financial issues.

Last April, a location and lease were approved by Irvine City Council. In November, a conditional-use permit was approved following a unanimous by Irvine's city planning commission.

The park is set to have 20 attractions on its opening, including a wave pool, tube slides, and drop slides among other attractions. It will be located at the Skyhawk and Great Park Boulevard intersection.

The park will be open from mid-May through mid-September every year.
