NORTHRIDGE, Calif. (KNX) — California State University Northridge canceled two women’s basketball games and paused the program Tuesday, citing COVID protocols within the program.

“The games scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 30 against UC Irvine and Saturday, Jan. 1 against UC San Diego will be canceled,” the university said in a statement.

“Per the recently adjusted Big West policies, the games will be declared no contest, and they will not be rescheduled.”

On Dec. 22 the Big West Conference Board  announced the change, saying that instead of a forfeit the games would be considered no contest.

“This aligns with NCAA standards that if a team does not appear or a game is not started due to circumstances such as weather conditions, accidents, breakdown of vehicles, illness or catastrophic causes, a no contest is declared,” the board said, adding that the decision reverses the Aug. 23 policy where a forfeit would be declared for canceled Big West competition if a team chose not to compete because they are unable to meet Big West competition minimum due to COVID-19.

The next scheduled games for the CSUN Matadors are slated for Thursday, Jan. 6 at Cal State Bakersfield and Saturday, Jan. 8 at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo.
