CLAREMONT, Calif. (KNX) – Residents in a Claremont neighborhood are trying to protect their homes from water released from a nearby dam.
It’s happening in the Stone Canyon development and the water is coming from the San Antonio Dam. At least 27 homes are impacted.
Homeowners told KNX News’s Jon Baird that they first noticed a small leak on Sunday.
One resident said her neighbor has water in his backyard.
“Their pool pump can't even keep up with what's going in the pool,” she said. “They have to put another pump for the pool to get all the water that's coming in and the neighbor across the street, they have problems too.”
According to KABC, the city sent a letter to residents that read, “In response, staff was informed that the Six Basins Water Master is conducting spreading operations to recharge the groundwater levels from what appears to be water released from the San Antonio Dam. Army Corps of Engineers records for the San Antonio Dam show a water level decrease of 20 feet within the last 15 days."
Claremont Public Information Officer Bevin Handel told KNX News the city is working with three agencies to limit the impact of flooding.
“Engineers are working with all the multiple different agencies to make sure that that water is being diverted away and trying to move that water in a different direction to provide relief from that groundwater,” she said.
The city will also be delivering sand and sandbags to Padua Park to help homeowners create water barriers around their homes. In addition, building inspectors and staff will be available to check out any damage.
