The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is holding its National Prescription Drug Take Back Day at thousands of locations across the U.S. on Saturday. DEA spokesperson Rosa Valle-Lopez told KNX News’ Bob Brill that people are encouraged to drop off unneeded or expired medications.

DEA spokesperson Rosa Valle-Lopez told KNX News’ Bob Brill that people are encouraged to drop off unneeded or expired medications.

.“It’s an opportunity for you to clear your medicine cabinet, drop it off anonymously safely…no questions asked,” she said.

Valle-Lopez said 300 people die every day from drug poisoning.

“70% of those drug poisonings come from fentanyl and 30% come from methamphetamine,” she said. “The reason why Take Back Day is so important is that kids or any individuals might have access to a medicine cabinet, might come across a medication, they might be tempted or curious…The fear is that the person might start relying on these medications.”

She added that people can drop off legal drugs, but no syringes or sharp objects.
