A program that has been giving hundreds of dollars to 125 low-income families in El Monte every month for nearly a year is set to end in May.

KNX News’ Craig Fiegener reported that the pilot program aimed to provide economic stability by giving the families $500 a month. Fiegener spoke to Alma Puente, an El Monte councilmember, about this pilot program.

“These were female heads of household with no partner in the household, with children under the age of 18 who had economic strain due to COVID,” she said.

Puente said that the purpose of the program was to alleviate some of the economic strain due to the pandemic and have some long-term impact on the family’s ability to raise their standard of living.

“What we've seen that most of these funds were spent on were on basic needs such as food, rent, gas, and school supplies,” she said.

El Monte received more than 2,500 applications for financial help when the program was first announced last year, Puente said.
