The Los Angeles County Sheriff and Fire departments responded Thursday afternoon to a disturbance involving both inmates and deputies at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic

According to Deputy Shawn Dubusky, a fight broke out at the maximum-security facility during a Title 15 check when an inmate rushed a deputy.

According to Dubusky, a Title 15 check is a state-mandated check that could entail a routine wellness check every 15 or 30 minutes depending if an inmate is in general or segregated population. It was unclear which pod the altercation occurred in.

Dubusky said other inmates joined the altercation. A nearby Emergency Response Team broke up the altercation using pepper spray.

At least six deputies were treated for minor injuries. An unknown number of inmates also suffered minor injuries, Dubusky said.

“It was not a riot and there were no casualties,” he said. “There were a lot of bruises and scratches.”
