Gunman arrested, hostage rescued in Long Beach after hours-long standoff

An armed suspect who had earlier taken a man hostage was arrested Thursday after a six-and-a-half-hour standoff in Long Beach.

Long Beach Police Department officers responded at around 10 p.m. Wednesday to Ocean Boulevard regarding a shots fired call. Upon their arrival, officers located the suspect, who ran away and entered into the back door of a home Gaviota Avenue and First Street, NBC 4 reported.


The suspect  barricaded himself inside the home, holding the homeowner hostage for several hours, police said. SWAT officers were called the scene and attempted to negotiate the homeowner's release and the suspect's surrender.

NBC 4 reported the hostage was released unharmed in the early morning hours Thursday and the suspect surrendered to police around 4:30 a.m. Thursday.

No injuries were reported.
