The victim’s caregiver heard the commotion and called the police.

Lindsay Meyers, the victim’s brother-in-law, told KNX News’ Karen Adams the victim was a paraplegic and the suspect was his former caregiver from “five or six years ago.”

“My brother-in-law, I talked to him every other day. Not once did he ever mention this guy,” he said. “He hasn't mentioned that guy to any other family members. Nothing. I mean … when the police mentioned the perpetrator's name, we were totally caught off guard, like the guy only worked for him for maybe a month.”

Irvine Police Department spokesman Kyle Oldoerp told City News Service that officers found the suspect at West Yale Loop and Springbrook South around 3:25 a.m. and shot him. He was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A knife was found at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing.
