What are the odds that a street musician gets joined by the actual artist whose song they’re playing? One in a thousand? One in ten thousand? One in a million? For one Boston street musician, he managed to beat those odds.

The Lumineers were in town for a show as drummer Jeremiah Fraites heard a familiar tune while he was out on a walk. Sam Spencer was playing the song “Ophelia” on a public piano when a “stranger” stopped by to join him.
“He came up behind me and was like ‘that’s a good song man,’ and I was like ‘thanks!’ Although now I feel embarrassed [since] it’s his song,” Spencer told WBZ Boston. Spencer didn’t notice Fraites at first, but when he stopped playing and turned his head, that’s when he noticed who it was that accompanied him.
Fraites and Spencer shared a few minutes talking to one another as The Lumineers drummer extended an offer of concert tickets to their show in Mansfield. Spencer gratefully accepted and now has a memory that’ll last him the rest of his life.
The Lumineers are currently in the midst of a lengthy tour in support of their latest studio album BRIGHTSIDE. The trek kicked off a few weeks ago as the band will be touring across the United States and Canada throughout the next few months. The tour is scheduled to wrap up on September 6th in Grand Rapids, MI.
“Going into this record with Wes, I was like, if we have two new songs that could make the setlist, our fans would be stoked,” Fraites previously told Audacy on how the new songs will be incorporated into their live shows. “We probably have six to eight that may very well make the permanent setlist.”
