Kanye West, who now goes by Ye, and his Donda Academy say in new court papers that a lawsuit brought by a former employee of the school against alleging breach of contract and state Labor Code violations should be dismissed.
In court papers filed Tuesday with Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Christopher K. Lui, attorneys for the 46-year-old rapper cite multiple defenses, including that plaintiff Isaiah Meadows' causes of action or barred in whole or in part by the statute of limitations.
Ye's lawyers also maintain that Meadows, "by his acts, conduct, or omissions, ratified the alleged misconduct of which he now complains."
The Ye attorneys' court papers ask that Meadows "take nothing by way of the complaint" and that it be "dismissed with prejudice," in which case it could not be refiled.
In his suit filed July 6, Meadows states he was hired in August 2020 as an assistant principal and that he repeatedly complained about safety issues at the Yeezy Christian Academy, the predecessor of the Donda Academy.
Meadows alleges a skylight was not replaced allowing rain to enter the building, soaking the floor and causing a mold odor, all because Ye did not like glass. Meadows also contends the building had exposed telephone and electrical wiring and that an electrical fire close to where students ate was left exposed.
In addition, Meadows maintains he had to pay $60,000 of his own money to lease a home in Calabasas near the school because Ye did not fulfill his promise to finance the entire rent payments.
The school became Donda Academy in August 2021. Meadows was employed as a teacher's assistant and physical education teacher and also taught faith in the morning, but he was fired a year later about two weeks before the start of the fall semester without an explanation, the suit states.
Meadows' lead attorney, Ronald Zambrano, also represents the three other former teachers suing the singer and the school as well as three former Lizzo dancers who have accused the singer of sexual harassment and creating a hostile work environment.
