LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The Los Angeles City Council will convene on Friday to consider possible changes to a citywide proof of vaccine mandate that took effect earlier this week.
The SafePassLA mandate requires people to show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 to enter restaurants, gyms, and other types of indoor establishments throughout the city. It went into effect Nov. 8, but city officials said they will not begin enforcing the order until Nov. 29. They say local businesses need more time to figure out how they will comply.
Between now and then, councilmembers will consider a number of tweaks to the mandate, including removing “malls and shopping centers” from the list of spaces requiring proof of vaccination to enter, as well setting a floor for patrons aged 12 and older.
As of now, the ordinance applies to indoor dining establishments, bars, coffee shops, gyms, recreation facilities, movie theaters, shopping centers, concert venues, event spaces, sports arenas, museums, spas, salons, and other businesses. It also requires people to show proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test to attend outdoor events in excess of 5,000 attendees.
After Nov. 29, violation of the mandate will result in businesses being issued $1,000 fines for a second violation, $2,000 for a third, and $5,000 for every violation thereafter.
