LOS ANGELES (KNX) — The number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Los Angeles County on Wednesday was nearly twice the reported number of the previous day, county health officials have revealed.
A total of 6,509 new cases were reported Wednesday, which the L.A. County Department of Public Health has characterized as one of the most precipitous single-day spikes reported over the course of the pandemic.

“We’re headed into a very challenging time over the holiday,” said Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer during a Wednesday briefing. “If our case numbers continue to increase at a rapid pace over this week and next, we could be looking at case numbers we have never seen before, well over 20,00 cases a day by the end of this year.”
Of the new cases reported Wednesday, 168 were confirmed Omicron infections, more than double the 60 cases reported on Monday and four times the 38 cases reported last Friday.
The county has warned that unvaccinated residents are most vulnerable to infection from Omicron. Those who have been vaccinated and have received boosters are approximately 20 times better protected from the virus, according to county data.
