More Angelenos were killed in traffic accidents than murdered in 2023, according to new data.

KNX News’ Pete Demetriou reported that 323 people were murdered in areas under the Los Angeles Police Department's jurisdiction as of Dec. 23, 2023. As of Dec. 30, 2023, 330 people died as a result of traffic collisions on L.A. streets.

LAPD Deputy Chief Don Graham said the majority of those deaths were preventable if people didn't speed, drive distracted, or while impaired.

“Please, make better decisions before you get behind the wheel of a car,” Graham said. “Everybody says that L.A. is a car culture and we tend to take that for granted. A car is a 5,000-pound weapon, if you use it wrongly.”

One of the deadliest areas of the city for traffic fatalities was LAPD South Traffic Division, where 115 people were killed last year. The previous record for this division was 100 fatalities in 2021.
