Los Angeles (KNX) - News of the 37 count federal indictment against former president Donald Trump had everybody distracted, looking down at their phones during Friday’s L.A. city council meeting.

KNX’s Craig Fiegener was at city hall to get initial reactions from some council members about the news. The general consensus? No one is above the law.

Embattled councilman Kevin de Leon said based on the former president's track record, he is not surprised in the slightest. “This is an individual during his tenure... who abuses his power in the executive branch,” de Leon said.

de Leon finished his chiding of Trump with what has become a popular sentiment among those speaking on the indictment, “no one irrespective of political affiliation, whichever position that you held is above the law.”

Council member Nithya Raman believes the issues currently plaguing D.C. in relation to Trump may get worse, saying, “We might see more instability and more violence here, and that makes me a little nervous frankly.”

Craig was also able to get reactions from councilmembers Monica Rodriguez and Hugo Soto-Martinez both of whom seemed to believe the indictment is a welcomed exercise in honoring the judicial process.

While some people might see these proceedings as what Trump would call a ‘witch hunt,’ Soto-Martinez said, “that's the sort of troubling place where we are in America right now where we seem to have two different realities.”

Rodriguez is interested to see what material evidence will be provided that she believes will reflect "what many of us were under an impression of in terms of the actions of [the Trump] administration.”

Rodriguez and Soto-Martinez both made comments to the effect that no one, including the president of the United States, is above the law.

Technically speaking no one should in fact be above the law. However some, such as political commentator Bill O’Reilly, voice a concern for equal application of the law.

In an interview with KNX O’Reilly said, “The federal government and the Justice Department’s gonna run into big trouble if they lay out Trump as this big abuser of national security, when Biden did exactly the same thing.”

Although there is a considerable difference between how President Biden handled the situation compared to former President Trump, most Republicans are poised to stand behind Trump despite the charges.
