LA officials given deadline for getting everyone off the streets in Skid Row area

LA officials now have a deadline looming for getting everyone off the streets of Skid Row.

Given a deadline of six months to get it done, with officials saying they’re not sure that’s even possible.

A federal judge's order for the homeless to be cleared from Skid Row by October has led to some, including Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, balking at the pace.

He declined to say if the city would appeal, but pointed to provisions in the order that could become roadblocks against ongoing efforts to address homelessness.

U.S. District Judge David Carter set a timetable by which single women and unaccompanied children must be offered placement within three months, families must be given shelter within four months, and every indigent person on Skid Row would be given the opportunity to come off the streets by October 18th.

Skip Miller, outside counsel for the county, said Carter's order "goes well beyond what the plaintiffs have asked for," adding that the county was evaluating its options, including the possibility of an appeal to the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.
