Los Angeles Unified School District rolled out its new food truck to high school students on Friday.
The food truck is part of the food service nutrition program and is free to students.
Manish Singh, director of food services for LAUSD, told KNX News’ Jon Baird there’s only one food truck now, but the district is expecting to have four by the end of the year.
“They will start by going to high schools, but eventually these trucks will roll out to all schools mainly for special occasions,” he said.
Singh added the intention is to get to every school, but for now, the food trucks will have to be booked in advance.
“We'll be putting together a document and principals can go in and then ask for the truck on a particular day and then we will confirm it with them and then show up at the school site during lunchtime,” he explained.
The truck will be able to serve up to 400 students and includes a variety of food choices such as tacos, hot dogs, and even vegan options.
Singh said the state and federal government will pay for the meals as it is part if the national school lunch program.
