BEVERLY HILLS (CNS) - Funeral services were pending Friday for celebrated songwriter Cynthia Weil, whose partnership with husband Barry Mann produced some of music's most memorable tunes, including "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and "On Broadway."
Weil died Thursday at her home in Beverly Hills at age 82.
In a statement, Weil's daughter, Dr. Jenn Mann, called her "the greatest mother, grandmother and wife our family could ever ask for." A cause of death was not released.
"Cynthia's high professional standard made us all better songwriters," singer Carole King wrote on her Facebook page Friday. "My favorite Cynthia lyric is, `Just a little lovin' early in the mornin' beats a cup of coffee for startin' out the day.' If we're lucky, we know this is true, but she wrote it -- and then she rhymed `mornin' with `yawnin' in the next verse. May the legacy of lyrics by Cynthia Weil continue to speak to and for generations to come. Rest in peace with love and gratitude."
Musician Stephen Bishop called Weil and her husband "a songwriting force in the music business for decades."
"She was so kind to me over the years," Bishop wrote. "Her talents as a songwriter were unmatched. Cynthia, the world will remember your songs and legacy. My condolences to her friends and family."
Singer Neil Sedaka called her death "a great loss to American pop music, as she wrote some of the standards that will live on forever."
Weil and Mann were married for more than six decades and churned out hits for a who's-who of musical talent, including Dolly Parton, the Ronettes, Paul Revere & the Raiders, the Crystals and the Righteous Brothers. They won Grammys in 1987 and were nominated for an Oscar for their song "Somewhere Out There" for the film "An American Tail."
Among their other hits were "Uptown," "Don't Know Much," "Somewhere Out There," "Rock and Roll Lullaby," "Walking in the Rain" and "Blame it on the Bossa Nova."
They wrote the hits "Kicks" and "Hungry" for Paul Revere & the Raiders.
"Thank you Cynthia for having Paul Revere & the Raiders be a part of you and Barry's history in music," the band posted on its Facebook page. "Our thoughts are with Barry and the entire family at this time."
They were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame that same year, and were later inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Weil is survived by her husband and daughter.
